I got an e-mail from Gus tonight! Gus! Gus! Gus! I love Gus! Wise and Powerful Gus!

I have to say these things about him because I haven't seen him in four years and I'm sending him this URL. I think he would like to see his name etched forever in this little corner of Al Gore's Internet.

Startling Funny Gus! Who makes me laugh and laugh!

Brave and Courageous Gus! The policeman who fearlessly fights crime!

Mighty Gus! Who believed me when I told him the receiver of the pay phone would come right off if he pulled hard enough!

Benevolent and Forgiving Gus! Who didn't get mad though he nearly dislocated his shoulder!

I was thrilled to hear from him. And also excited about Shay's upcoming visit. An old college friend, and probably my best friend in CT, she's never been to Chicago before. What fun we'll have!

Life is exceedingly good as of late. Here are some more reasons why:

  • My Italian is coming along swimmingly and I can now effortlessly say things like "The red pen is longer than the green pencil" and "The brown dog is bigger than the white dog." While these phrases may only elicit odd looks from the natives as I stroll down the streets of Naples, I'll say them with pride.
  • Nothing blew up at work while I was gone and it felt like I was genuinely missed. As The Voice of the Merged Corporation, I'm beginning a new series of announcements and I'm even allowed to write the scripts.
  • I've got the hang of that guitar lick for class and am completely digging my new teacher.
  • Hula Pet and I are in one of those relationship stages where everything is blissful and I'm crazy about him.
  • I have discovered that a diet high in fiber makes me regular.
  • Big Brother is on six nights a week.

I'm having more fun that a girl ought to have.

Plus, you would not believe the size of my potato.

He's enormous. One of his pointy spires tipped about two weeks ago and new spikes are shooting straight up out of it. He commands an entire window sill in our kitchen. I had planned to snap pictures of him at various places around the city--on the L, at Buckingham Fountain, on Michigan Avenue, Sears Tower, next to Sue the dinosaur, but he just got too big to cart around.

Here he is helping me write this entry. He's not a good typist.

Yes, I know it's hard to see, but that's Curious George watching out for him. All in all this little monkey, Bertold and the Wolfman, and Nixon and the Blessed Virgin did a good job raising him, no? I sure didn't have anything to do with it.

And here's me and Curious George waving to Gus! Hi Gus!
